Treadmill Speed

What is the treadmill speed range?

The speed range of a treadmill determines what speed you can run up to on your treadmill. On most motorised treadmills, you can change the speed using simple controls. The speed range of the treadmill is very important, but depends mainly on what the purpose of the user is. Having a good speed range can mean the workouts can be intensified, varied (potentially more motivation), and allow you to better your overall fitness as you can work on different energy systems. Since the speed range requirements differ for every user, this should be an important part when deciding which motorised treadmill to purchase.

Treadmill Speed Range – What you need to know?

A greater speed range can be very beneficial as although the full range may not be used immediately after purchase, workouts may be varied and intensified over the long-term as fitness naturally improves. There are two important factors that should determine what speed range is required and should be used as a guideline when deciding what would best fit your requirements.

Firstly, the purpose of the treadmill should be considered. What is it to be used for primarily, such as jogging or walking and at what intensity? If you are purely a long-distance runner than a greater speed range may never be required. However, if you intend to run quick or even sprint, then a greater speed range may be necessary. The second factor is your fitness level itself. If you are new fitness enthusiast then spending extra for a greater speed range may not be important. On the other hand if you are experienced with treadmills and have good fitness, then you may need to use the greater speed available.

As a guideline a 0-6mph speed range is adequate for those wanting to primarily walk. For most users looking to run a speed range of between 6-12mph maximum is recommended, with 8mph suitable for a light jog and 12mph for the more serious runner. Most motorised treadmills will more than fit these needs. In a nutshell a 0-10 mph speed range would meet the needs of most users, and you will find that most treadmills are more than good enough in this department. As always, improvements should be considered and especially if improving your fitness is a long-term goal then having a greater speed range will cater for the future as well as allowing you to vary your workouts to get the benefits you need specifically, which may include running at a greater intensity and quicker speed.
